Lighting

As we chose to set our music video outdoors at night-time this meant that we needed various pieces of lighting to make sure our video was clear and looked professional.

For the party and dancing sequences we used this lighting in order to make sure everything could be seen clearly. We were able to put these at either end of the area in which we were filming and this produced enough light to film these sections. We only chose to use these lights for these sections as the rest of the scenes that we needed to film were quite fast paced and involved a lot of moving around and moving these lights would have been time consuming and difficult. We also had to hire a generator in order to power these lights in the wood but the strength of these lights meant that we were able to use them in between filming in order to light the space we were working as it got darker throughout the night.

The main light that we used for the filming of our video was a light which we attached to our camera. This light was incredibly bright and this meant that we were easily able to light up the actors enough to ensure they would be clearly seen in the final video. This meant that filming was much easier as we were able to get a variety of shots as the light moved with the camera, meaning that what we were filming was always lit. We also took the light off the bracket and held it which meant we were able to easily move it about and light what we needed, as well as creating various effects with the lighting in order to make our video look more professional.

Digi-Pack Raw Photos

Update

Having now finished filming for a third time, we have all of the shots we need. This time around we took shots from different angles and made sure we had a variety of footage. We can now edit the video and create the finished product. The filming still isnt quite the same quality as the first set of shots, but this is problem that we feel we can over come in the editing process.

Font Ideas

These are our ideas that we have collected for our Digi-Pak band title for the album covers, we will study these and narrow it down to one that we feel matches our genre and theme of music video. We have chosen the name "Beyond Metro" because we feel that it suits our genre of Indie Pop. We are photoshopping these fonts slighlty to gain the desired effect when the final piece is chosen.

Update

After having to re-film for the second time, we having to re-film yet again. We have come across many issues regarding camera quality and lighting. After encoding all of our new clips, we realised the quality of the shots didn't match the previous takes, and so we have decided collectively that we need to re-shoot them. We hope we resolve it soon.

Cast

Our main cast member is Will. He is a member of our group and will be taking on the role of lead singer in our music video. We chose will for this role as we feel that he looks how we imagined our band to. We needed someone who looked indie and cool as well as someone who was confident enough to be filmed singing, dancing and acting.

We have used various members of our friendship group as background members for our video. We chose them as they are young and fit the the youthful, indie feel of our video. Again we needed people who were confident in front of the camera and would be willing to be filmed doing various things; which they were.

Update

After filming we have looked through our footage and have discovered that shots that have been done during the day are not as professional looking as we had hoped. We also found that we did not have enoyugh variety of shots and feel we need a narrative running throughout. We are re-filming some shots on Monday 15th October during the night to gain a better quality of footage.

Digi Pack Ideas

After taking our inspiration from the album Foster the people we have come up with two simple yet effective ideas. We have decided to incorporate the indie genre with the party atmosphere bringing in our main theme.

Music Video Inspiration

After watching this video we are going to take the majority of our inspiration from it. As the location is very similar to ours and they are using similar lighting techniques to us. We also like the way it focuses on the main singer and has shots of people dancing and enjoying themselves.

We are also taking inspiration from this video as we love the lighting that they have used to illuminate the people at the party. We feel that we can match this lighting as we have purchased a camera light which has been specifically designed for that.

Risk Assessment

What potential hazards will we encounter?
How will these hazards be prevented?
Objects and debris from the wood on the floor.

We will clear the area of any large obstructions.
Plug sockets and trailing wires.
This will be avoided by using tape to keep them flat on the ground.

The exhaust fumes from the generator.
The funnel for the fumes will have to be kept pointing away from where everybody will be placed for filming to avoid inhaling the fumes.

Refilling the generator with fuel.
We will use a funnel to avoid spillages when refilling the tank of the generator.

Electrical equipment sparking.
We will make sure that we keep any objects that could catch alight quite easily are moved away from where the electricity is placed such as dry leaves and twigs.

Visibility reduced due to darkness.
We will have battery powered torches and light equipment to hand if the electricity were to fail.

Update

After having difficulties transporting people to our location  we have cut down to about 8 people featuring in the video, we are going to have to use precise camera angles to give the effect of there being more people than there actually is. We are also having difficulties obtaining band members and instruments so we have decided to just have the lead singer on his own and focus mainly on shots of him singing.

Floor Plan

This is a brief sketch of our floor plan to portray where everything will be placed including props, actors, camera's and lights. We decided to place all of the lights and cameras in this position because we felt that they would be illuminated much better for the quality of our video. Fairy lights that are on the trees will be placed  behind the actors as they dance and sing, the generator will be placed out of the way to reduce the hazards that it may cause. This floor plan may change as we film our video.

Digi-Pak Inspiration

We found this album cover for the band 'Foster the People' and we have deicded to use this as our main insipration for our digi-pak. We like how the album cover is party based, like our music video, and we would have this theme running throughout all the pictures on the CD covers.

Shooting Schedule

We plan to film all of our shots in Stretton Wood on Friday 5th October.

Facebook Event

As a group we decided to create an event on Facebook in order to invite people along to the filming of our video. The concept of our video requires many people to feature in in to ensure that the party looks realistic and 'full.' We chose to use facebook as a way of inviting people as all of friends are on facebook and we thought that connecting with them through a social networking site would allow all the information for the filming to be given in one go and we would be able to contact a wide amount of people. It has also allowed us to see who will be attending and therefore how many people we can expect and if we need to invite any others.

Update

After going to do the location shots we realised that our performance space has no source of electricity. As we want to shoot the video towards the evening when it is getting dark we feel we need lights to light the set. We enquired about hiring a generator from a national company but reliased that the price was too high. We then asked the site manager at our college if he had any contacts for generators which we could use and he has come back to us with one that we can hire for the day at a lower price through our college. We are just waiting on the confirmation. If all goes ahead we are filming on Friday 5th October in Stretton Wood.

We have also recently bought a light that attaches to the camera which we can use for close ups of people when it gets dark.

Costume Ideas

As the song is indie pop, we want the whole band to wear happy colours, while still looking indie. This would mainly consist of skinny jeans and band/logo t-shirts.

LEAD SINGER: We want him to stand out from the rest of the band. For example, we think he should be wearing dark skinny jeans, with either a graphic tee or a shirt buttoned (cheque or plain) all the way up to the top. We would maybe consider him wearing sunglasses.

GUITAR PLAYER: This member of the band would be wearing a trilby hat with a plain white t-shirt. Again we would want him to wear black skinny jeans, but with a cool denim jacket.

KEY BOARD PLAYER: We would want the key board player to wear a cool jumper with a shirt buttoned up underneath. He would wear this with either chinos or skinny jeans.

For all of these roles we have been able to get our friends to perform for us. James and Nick will become the guitar player and key board player. After much consideration, we have chosen Will (a member of our group) to be the leader singer. We feel he has the look, confidence and style to pull of being the lead singer. Being part of our group also means he understand what the role entails and how he needs to perform.

Final Idea

For our final idea we have chosen to film our music video in a wood. We will feature the band playing and performing in the wood as well as having actors pretending to be having a party in the wood amongst the band. We feel that this is an imaginative idea however is still simple for the audience to follow as well as being something that we will be easily able to film. We will use various shot compositions and camera shots in order to make this a high quality video and interesting to the viewer.

Eyeworth Wood, New Forest

The song that we are using is Scouting For Girls, 'She's So Lovely'. We all like this song and are familiar with it and we also feel that this is a fun, jovial and entertaining song to create a music video for. This is the original music video for this song which we will be sure to not copy, however it has given us some ideas for the type of shots and camera angles to use.

Audience Research

For our audience research we interviewed various people, asking them questions relating to music videos in order to discover what sorts of music videos people like. This will help us to decided what music video to create.

From our Audience Research we discovered that our target audience (teenagers and young adults) mainly prefer to see a narative in music videos. They want them to be fun, uplifting and happy rather than dark and depressing. Some did however say that they enjoy the perfrormance element of music videos and we will take this into account and try to incorporate both into our final video. We also discovered that they are more attracted to music videos that are current and keep up with current trends in bothe music and fashion.

3 Music Video Proposals

3 Proposals

Driving Lesson

In this idea the young boy is having his first driving test and his instructor is an older woman who he finds very attractive. He is being filmed in the car making all these mistakes and it shows the woman helping him out by touching his hand when on the gear stick and showing where the wipers are and the indicator etc. He passes and gets given his certificate he gets out the car and the woman drives away into the sunset. He is sad.

House Party

The mum bringing out snacks and drinks and all the younger girls are around the main boy prying for his attention but he is not interested in them he keeps noticing the mother who is walking in and out the room. He goes into the kitchen to find the mother making hot dogs he gets given one and the mother squeezes ketchup onto it seductively. He is sick on her after being really drunk and walks away in shame down the street.

Woods vs. Car Park

There will be a band playing the song situated in a wooded area and there will be cutaways to solo and group dance routines situated in a car park with routines to the song. At the end everyone will be in the forest with the band dancing along to the final chorus.

Location Shots

These are our location shots of places that we have chosen to film which we think are relevant to the genre of our short scene.

Preliminary Storyboard

This is a photograph of our preliminary storyboard which we will be following when filming our short scene.
